Curb App Review: Is This Taxi App America’s Best?

Curb App Review

Often touted as the “top taxi app in the United States”, Curb allows users to hail nearby taxi drivers via their smartphone in 65 U.S. cities. Read our in-depth review to learn how the app works, the associated usage fees, and what users say about the taxi-hailing service.

How Does the App Work?

Users can hail a cab in two ways: the “Ride Now” feature allows users to reach their destination by inputting their pick-up and drop-off locations. The “Ride Later” feature enables users to schedule a taxi up to 24 hours in advance.

You can also use the app in cities where on-street taxi hailing is faster and more convenient. After flagging down a Curb taxi, use the “Pair & Pay” feature (available in select cities) to pay the driver using the payment method on your app instead of hard cash.

The app only works with commercially-licensed and insured taxi drivers, so you can rest assured that your ride is reliable.

How To Use the Curb App

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to use the app.

  1. Sign up: After downloading the app on iOS or Android, users must go through a sign-up process by verifying their phone number and a payment method.
  1. Request a ride: Selecting “Ride Later” will require you to input your preferred pick-up time and date. Choosing “Ride Now” will take you to a live map where you’ll be prompted to add your pick-up and drop-off location. After adding the addresses, click on “Request Taxi” to find one near you.
  1. Pay through the app: If you hailed a Curb taxi on the street, use the app to pay for your ride. Once inside the cab, tap the “Pair & Pay” feature (available in New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Miami, and Las Vegas) and enter the 7-digit code from your cab’s backseat. The taxi fare will be deducted from the payment method connected to your app. Curb doesn’t accept cash payments in most cities.

Are There Any Costs to Using the App?

A $1.95 service fee is charged on top of your taxi fare, but only if you book AND pay with the platform. Otherwise, there are no costs, and the Curb taxi fare will depend on the rates in your city.

A new feature available only in select cities is “Upfront Pricing”, which allows you to immediately see the exact price without watching the meter. In other locations where this feature is not yet available, the price on the app is only an estimate of the final pricing.

How To Contact Customer Support

Curb does not have a toll-free number for inquiries and customer support, and it relies on emails and tickets to resolve issues. Thankfully, the Curb Support web page is full of answers to FAQs. The only way to get in touch with the support team is to fill up a form on the website or email [email protected]

Bottom Line: Is It Worth It?

At face value, Curb looks like an excellent alternative to more expensive ride-sharing apps like Uber or Lyft. Being able to book affordable taxis instead of pricey private vehicles is the app’s main selling point. However, when considering other factors, this is not always the case. Let’s take Uber as a point of comparison.

Outside of peak hours, UberX or UberPool might be cheaper than a Curb taxi. On the flip side, if the demand for Uber is high and the prices surge, Curb taxis are more affordable. It’s easier to understand Curb’s value in conjunction with other ridesharing apps, so using more than one app gets you better deals.

In addition, our Curb app review team discovered several recurring raves and rants. Users loved the freedom a taxi provides and how much more affordable it is compared to other ridesharing services.

On the other hand, several users complained about how long it takes to connect with a taxi.

Considering all Curb app reviews, we definitely recommend the app. It’s usually more affordable than its competitors, and the ability to pay for a cab from your phone is a valuable feature. However, we don’t suggest that you avoid other ride-sharing platforms in favor of the Curb app. Use the app to circumvent Uber or Lyft’s price surge, but if Curb fails to connect you with a taxi, take advantage of another option.
